Volleyball Canada will be inducting its Class of 2013 during the Canada vs. Korea FIVB World League match at Hershey Centre in Mississauga on June 14, 2013. This year’s inductees are Vale Savege (Builder), Sandy Silver (Builder) and Gino Brousseau (Athlete). Brief biographies on each of the inductees and their contribution to the sport are available below.Following the match Volleyball Canada will be hosting a reception for the inductees at the Hershey Centre.
Vale Savege Vale Savege has made significant contributions to sport in BC, Ontario, Canada and beyond. A multi-sport athlete, she was a member of both Canada’s national volleyball and basketball programs, including as a player in the Pan American Games for both sports over her career. After retiring from playing, Vale coached at the elementary and high school level, before moving on to coach the University of Toronto Women’s Volleyball program. Moving out West, Vale co-founded the women’s volleyball program at Simon Fraser University and was the first women to officiate an International volleyball match in Japan.As an International Official, Vale served as an Officials Executive Member for the OVA while overseeing its National Officials Upgrade Program during her time in Ontario. Vale became a Volleyball Canada Lifetime Member in 2000 for her contributions as an official. Sandy Silver For over 40 years, the sport community in Canada, and in particular Ontario and British Columbia, has benefited from the selfless dedication and unwavering leadership of Sandy Silver. Sandy was an outstanding athlete, but she would continue her role in sport as a coach, mentor, administrator and volunteer. Sandy’s dedication, passion and contributions to the sport of volleyball, to the women who play volleyball and her steadfast dedication to the principles of gender equity are truly inspirational. She also worked hard to ensure women’s sports received appropriate funding and that policies designed to create a safe and supportive environment for young athletes were developed and implemented across the sport system in Canada.As a coach, Sandy shared her vision as coach for many teams over the years, including the Seneca College, York University and UBC volleyball programs and also served as an Assistant Coach for Canada’s National Women’s Volleyball Team. A former OVA Executive Director (1976-78), Sandy received the OVA’s Achievement Award for her dedication and contribution to mandating gender equity in sport.Gino Brousseau Gino Brousseau becomes the 15th athlete in history to be inducted into the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Gino has been recognized as one of the very best and most exciting players in the history of Volleyball in Canada. As a member of Canada’s National Volleyball teams Gino represented Canada for many years, including in three Olympic qualifying tournaments, culminating in playing for Canada at the 1982 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Over his lengthy international career, Gino competed in three World League competitions, a World Championship, the World Cup and the World University Games. Gino also enjoyed a stellar professional international career competing for 13 years as a professional volleyball player in Italy, Japan and France where he helped his teams win numerous titles. Following his retirement as an active player, Gino turned to coaching as a way to give back to the sport, including being named an Assistant Coach for Team Canada. Gino was inducted into the Quebec Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2009. |
