Over its 32 editions, the Vancouver Open has evolved from a simple volleyball tournament into a cultural experience, celebrating the spirit of sport, summer, and community on the sands of beautiful Kitsilano Beach each summer.
The tournament attracts some of the top beach volleyball talent from around the globe, with alumni consisting of former Olympians, Canadian National Team members and world champions. The intensity and passion these athletes bring to the competition is rivaled only by the summer sun. That–along with a stunning backdrop of English Bay and the Coast Mountains–combine to make the Vancouver Open a must-see event.
At the centre of ensuring events like the Vancouver Open remain at their very best year after year are initiatives like the “Friends of the Open” campaign, which seeks donations from fans like you to support athletes and the vital infrastructure needed to make the event sustainable well into the future.
“For me, the Friends of the Van Open was an opportunity to give back financially to an event that has been a highlight of my annual calendar for two decades,” said Ryan Gandy, a longtime competitor and supporter. “As an athlete, the Van Open was the reason to train and the best weekend of the year to play. Later, as a spectator, I understood the value the event brings to the community as a whole and how important it is that it continues to exist. I know it is a costly event to run, and I wanted to help make sure that the next generations of players have the opportunity to experience what I did.”
