Volleyball BC’s Barrier Reporting
In January 2023, we launched our Strategy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion which outlined our commitments to making volleyball welcoming and accessible. Since then we have established a DEI Committee with community representatives to help oversee and support the delivery of this work. Volleyball BC is proud to release our new Barrier Reporting Mechanism.
Barrier Reporting Mechanism
VBC is released in August of 2024 our new barrier reporting mechanism. This form allows individuals to report barriers to participation and accessing volleyball to Volleyball BC.
Barriers such as physical barriers to accessing facilities or courts can be reported to VBC so that in future VBC is aware of potential barriers and take steps to mitigate the barrier, avoid the barrier, and communicate in advance of potential barriers. Other barriers that can be reported include: financial, culture, language, or physical factors.
Report Accessibility Challenges
VBC is a not for profit provincial sport organization with limited control over facilities and a small staff team fully deployed to delivering volleyball services. However, as a provincial sport organization we have many community partners and can advocate for enhanced inclusion and diversity objectives with our partners, various levels of government and the broader sport community.
We recognize that there are barriers that can impact people participating in volleyball, especially for groups that historically have been excluded, discriminated against, or had limited access. These groups can include but are not restricted to women, low-income families, Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, seniors, people with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
By reporting these barriers, you will help us gather information about the challenges that prevent people from being included and participating in volleyball activities. Volleyball takes place in many locations and organizations across BC, and many of these activities or facilities may not be directly managed by Volleyball BC. This makes it hard for us to take direct action in some cases.
However, by collecting information about people’s experiences, we hope to identify and encourage changes to make our sport more accessible. Information will be used to identify common issues and shared with Volleyball BC Board, staff, and partners to identify actions where possible.
